Passport Essentials
Before you even look at visa applications, check your passport. Kenya requires all visitors to hold a passport that is valid for at least six months beyond your planned date of entry.
The Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) System
Kenya has moved away from traditional visa systems to an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) model.
How to Apply: You must use the official government portal (www.etakenya.go.ke) to submit your application.
Requirements: When applying, you will need a digital copy of your passport’s bio-data page, a recent passport-style photograph (or a clear selfie), your travel itinerary (including flight numbers), and proof of your accommodation, such as a hotel booking or a letter of invitation if you are staying with friends.
Timing: While applications are typically processed within three business days, it is highly recommended that you apply at least two to four weeks before your departure to account for any unforeseen delays.
Important Reminders for Arrival
Once your eTA is approved, ensure you carry both a digital copy on your phone and a printed version in your travel documents.
By taking care of these requirements well in advance, you eliminate the stress of last-minute documentation issues. Staying informed through the official government portal is the best way to keep up with any policy updates. With your passport valid, your eTA approved, and your travel plans confirmed, you are ready to experience the wonders of a Kenyan safari.
